This live recording of Gergiev’s Tchaikovsky Fifth was made on June 11, 1989, five months before the fall of the Berlin Wall, to commemorate the visit of Mikhail Gorbachev, Secretary General of the Soviet Union at the time, to West Germany. The performance was given with the German-Soviet Junge Philharmonic Orchestra, which was founded by pianist and conductor Justus Franz, and whose principal conductor was Gergiev, who also served as artistic director of the Kirov Opera and principal guest conductor of the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra. Even though this was an official government event, Gergiev’s tremendous enthusiasm in front of the audience enveloped the young orchestra, and the vividness with which he led the music to its climax was a joy to hear. The German and Soviet national anthems are played.
