Heinrich Schiff (1951-2016), who began playing piano at the age of six and cello at nine, won prizes in several competitions before achieving international fame when he understudied Rostropovich at the International Society for Contemporary Music (ISCM) in 1972. In 1982, before he began his conducting career, Schiff gave a recital at the Salzburg Festival that showed him at his best as a cellist.
