Heinrich Schiff (1951-2016), who began playing piano at the age of six and cello at nine, won prizes in several competitions before achieving international fame when he understudied Rostropovich at the International Society for Contemporary Music (ISCM) in 1972. In 1982, before he began his conducting career, Schiff gave a recital at the Salzburg Festival that showed him at his best as a cellist. With the support of the virtuoso Tsaharias, the audience will enjoy Schiff’s wonderful performance of cool Shostakovich, passionate Beethoven, and refreshing Brahms, showing his ever-changing expression depending on the piece.Naxos Japan
