[Best Classics 100] A brilliant record of the remarkable deepening of the music of the last years of the great master Vandt. 1996’s Brahms “No. 1” is one of Vandt’s third and final Brahms symphony cycle. The music is organically bled in every detail, and while it is meticulously constructed in terms of phrasing, fullness of inner voices, balance of instruments, and changes in tone, it is free from artificial rigidity, and its naturalistic dignity conveys the fullness of Vant’s later years. The coupling includes Schubert’s “Fifth,” performed in October 2001 at one of the last concerts of Vant’s life, and is a deeply nourishing work that shows no signs of age. This is the first appearance of the new coupling for the Best Classical 100 series. Japan exclusive project / Blu-spec CD2 / Recording dates: April 21-23, 1996, October 28-30, 2001 / Location: Hamburg, Musie
