Aya Nagatomi’s second album for the Liszt Year (200th anniversary of Liszt’s birth). Liszt is one of Nagatomi’s favorite composers, and she has given many performances in the past that have moved the hearts of audiences. After graduating from the high school attached to the Tokyo College of Music, Nagatomi himself studied at the Liszt Academy of Music in Hungary under the renowned teacher Georges Nardole. After a successful recital at the Hamarikyu Asahi Hall in November 2010, Nagatomi surprised the audience with further deepening of his performance at the Hamarikyu in February 2011 (additional performance) and at the Osaka Sankei Hall Breeze in March 2011. The lively and tense “Islamei” was wonderful, but what really took the audience by surprise were the two encore pieces from the list. The encore of “La Campanella,” one of Liszt’s best-known works, was a hit on the web as a superb performance that brought out “more than just a virtuoso performance, but a moving experience,” as every single detail of the trills was filled with musical excitement. Liszt’s works have many facets that cannot be summed up in a single word, namely, they are a display of overwhelming technical prowess, romantic melodies, highly effective pianistic arrangements, and profound religious music.This is a gem that will solidify Nagatomi’s reputation as an outstanding album among the many “Liszt albums” that are expected to be released in 2011.Nippon Columbia
