A collection of small string quartets written under various themes such as love, life and death. Webern’s masterpiece “Langsamer Thatz” reflects the young man’s love affair, a romantic music before he had yet to abandon tonality. The collection includes a small piece by Mendelssohn written in his later years, two satirical pieces by Shostakovich, a mournful piece written on the occasion of the death of Nielsen’s friend, Puccini’s “Chrysanthemum,” also a mournful piece, two delightful pieces by Dvořák, also known as piano pieces, and various other pieces by Schubert, Wolff and Turina. The quartet also features works by Schubert, Wolff, and Turina. Recorded in 2014 by the Arabella String Quartet.
