[Ashkenazy (1937-) was 26 years old when he recorded this collection of Rachmaninoff’s piano concertos, his best-known works. With youthful enthusiasm and superb technique, Ashkenazy fully expresses the musical charm of Rachmaninoff’s masterpiece concerto, which combines modern piano technique and powerful dynamism with a rich lyricism. The excellent support by Kondrashin and Fistulari, two great conductors of the past, is also superb.
