Sibelius’ second release with Rouvali and the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra! Following the first Sibelius Symphony No. 1 coupled with “En Saga” (ALPHA440/NYCX-10035) with the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra, of which Löwvari is the chief conductor, this second release is a combination of No. 2 and “Christian II”. The unique interpretation of phrasing and dunamik, which was heard in No. 1, is also demonstrated here in many places. This spins out a new story, depicting the work from a different perspective and eventually reaching a climax that envelops the audience in a magnificent landscape. The second piece, “Christian II,” is a suite of music for a play written by Sibelius just before he completed his First Symphony, based on a play by his friend Adolph Paul about a real king who ruled Scandinavia in the 16th century. It is a fine work, typical of Sibelius, that combines simple beauty and large scale in a youthful style. In a recent interview, Rouvali spoke enthusiastically about the Sibelius score that has been passed down to the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra, with writing by Nämé Järvi. The performance is rooted in a strong attachment to and deep understanding of Sibelius, the proud composer of his homeland, and is extremely beautiful and powerful.Naxos Japan
