Along with the New Year’s Concert, the “Vienna Philharmonic Summer Night Concert” is one of the Vienna Philharmonic’s most famous events, and since its inception in 2004, it has become an established tradition in early summer in Vienna. The open-air concert, held at Schönbrunn Palace, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is free of charge and open to 100,000 music fans, and is broadcast live to more than 60 countries around the world. In 2016, an evening of brilliant French music will be conducted by Russian-born Semyon Bishkov. In addition to popular masterpieces by Bizet, Berlioz, and Ravel, the concerto for two pianos by Poulenc (first recorded by the Vienna Philharmonic) will be performed by Katja & Marielle Labrecque. Bolero” and “Daphnis et Chloe” were also recorded by the Vienna Philharmonic for the first time in 20 years since the 1996 Maazel recording, and “Can Can” from “Heaven and Hell” was recorded for the first time.
