Englund is one of the major composers in 20th century Finland. He is known for the story of how he was able to come to the United States and study under Copland after Sibelius evaluated his own work and gave him a letter of recommendation. He was also an outstanding pianist, but gave up his career when he injured his finger during a battle against the Russians. Although there are not many piano pieces left, his works with strong irony and humor in the style of Prokofiev have a different feel from his orchestral works.Naxos Japan
