This is a collection of sonatas by Kogelf (1747-1818), a Bohemian-born composer and music teacher who was active in Vienna. After his initial musical education in Bohemia, he went to Prague to study law and then returned to music, making his debut as a composer in 1771 and composing much acclaimed stage music for the Prague National Theater. Despite not having a reputation as a pianist at the time, he quickly mastered his craft and rose through the ranks to become an imperial music teacher in Austria, officially recognized by the Wagenseil. He was also a music publisher, and at one time Mozart even published some of his works with Kogelf’s publishing house. Although his sonatas are not as innovative as Haydn’s or Mozart’s, they clearly have the elegance that made him the most popular musician of his time, and some of his sonatas contain surprisingly dramatic expressions.
