The Kiewitas Ensemble is a group formed by members of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra (the ensemble’s name, Kiewitas, is Latin for “city, citizenship”). In this album, the group collaborates with the “Gypsy Way Ensemble” led by Czech violinist Pavel Spörzl to explore the connection between Western music and Roma (gypsy) music. The works of Brahms, Hubaye, Popper, and others with ethnic elements are given new arrangements and transformed into even more passionate music. Originally conceived by Kiewitas Ensemble violinists Yu Jankin and Spörzl, who have been close friends since their student days, the project has turned out better than expected.Naxos Japan
