MACMILLAN, J.
:
Born in the Ottoman Empire, Kalomiris was a composer who settled in Athens at the age of 28, via Istanbul, Vienna, and Kharkov in the Ukraine, and contributed to the development of modern Greek music.” Although he is often praised as the “father of modern Greek music,” Kalomiris himself favored Wagner and Rimsky-Korsakov, and his works have a mixture of Romanticism and the rich sounds of the Russian National Music School. Although there are not many piano works, the early works entitled “Ballades” and “Rhapsodies” are strongly influenced by Chopin and Liszt, but the later works are written with an avant-garde and original taste, using unique rhythms that can be said to be the result of “the study of Greek folk songs,” which Kalomiris devoted his latter years of his life to. The latter works are written in an avant-garde and original style.Naxos Japan
