Edita Gruberova is a soprano with an overwhelmingly beautiful voice and astonishing technique. Born in Bratislava, she made her debut at the age of 22 as Rosina in Rossini’s “The Barber of Seville” at the local opera house, and two years later in 1970 she was signed by the Vienna State Opera to play the Queen of the Night in “The Magic Flute,” a role she also performed to great acclaim at the Salzburg Festival in 1973. In 1980, she made her first visit to Japan, where her superb performance as Zerbinetta in Richard Strauss’s “Ariadne of Naxos” won her instant popularity, and since then she has continued to visit Japan and perform her mature voice until the 21st century. This album, produced by BR-KLASSIK to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Gruberova’s career as a singer, chronicles her singing in a way that has never been released before. The songs, with their enchanting resonance backed by perfect vocal technique, are worthy of the name “Queen of Coloratura.Naxos Japan
