Rudolf Barshai (1924-2010), a famous conductor with close ties to Japan, is also known as an excellent viola player and composer. This is a collection of three chamber symphonies arranged from the string quartets of Shostakovich (1906-1975), whom he studied with as a student at the Moscow Conservatory, including the Chamber Symphony (arrangement of No. 8) from 1960, all of which have been expanded but never lose their tension.
