Ibeyi
:
Ibeyi gained international acclaim for their debut album Ibeyi (2015) and was increasingly featured in a short film for Beyonce’s album Lemonade (2016). Now, in a very different state, both in themselves and in the world situation since that time, the newly completed “Ash” is more visceral and contains a powerful political statement. Produced by Richard Russell, the girls’ pop and soulful sound blends their Yoruba roots with traditional Yoruba music, and delves into themes of womanhood, spirituality, activism, and racism, putting them at the top of a new generation jazz scene in its new golden age! In addition to Kamasi Washington, the album features a stellar lineup of guests, including musical genius Chilly Gonzalez, Michel Ndegeocello, a lone bassist active in the contemporary jazz scene – funk R&B, and Spain’s Mara Rodriguez.
