The Republic of Armenia has nurtured a rich culture since BC. Stepanian, born in 1897, is a composer praised as “a great Armenian” by Khachaturian, a fellow student at the Gnesin Music School. He was a writer of numerous works, including three symphonies, operas, songs, and piano pieces, in the vein of Komitas, who is considered to have established modern Armenian music. His piano pieces are in the style of Chopin and Rachmaninoff, but are characterized by nostalgic melodies that incorporate the essence of Armenian folk songs. Oriental melodies and unique scales can be heard throughout this collection of preludes.Naxos Japan
