Released at a turbulent point for West Coast rap, Snoop Doggy Dogg’s second full-length finds him rebuilding amid chaos. With Dr Dre gone and Tupac’s death still fresh, he turns inward, swapping Doggystyle’s cinematic bounce for something a bit looser and more reflective. The beats are pure G-funk – thick basslines, syrupy synths and Charlie Wilson’s velvet hooks but there’s a melancholy that lingers beneath the gloss. ‘Snoop’s Upside Ya Head’ and ‘Vapors’ carry that duality: smooth as smoke yet edged with survival. Daz Dillinger, DJ Pooh and Soopafly hold the production down, giving Snoop space to stretch out as both storyteller and survivor. It’s the sound of an artist learning to stay cool when the temperature drops.
