Jeffs says, “This song began with a project I created specifically for a project with Greenpeace in the fall of 2018 about penguins in Antarctica. There are four unique Antarctic penguins that live there, each with their own unique characteristics and qualities. From there I imagined a world of anthropomorphic penguins, penguins with their own world of stories and adventures that we created.” In 2005, I was invited to participate in an adventure to recreate Scott’s last trip to Antarctica in 1911, using the same equipment as Edward. I am not an explorer, but I was very interested because of a family connection to my grandmother, who was Scott’s wife before she married my grandfather. At this stage, Antarctica was a protected environment, so instead we decided to spend three months on the Greenland ice sheet. We did some dog sledding and then manhandled our gear across a glacier at an altitude of 10,000 feet to a thousand kilometers ahead of us. I had lots of time to come home and think about life. Then I decided to get a master’s degree in music and focus on composing music.Even when I am in the most remote and quiet places, I find that music is a big part of my inner world and imagination. I would spend days reworking songs in my head and writing new ones,” he says, “and then I would try them out and write them down at the end of the day.
