The opera “The Mercy of Emperor Tito” was written in the year of Mozart’s death in a short period of about 20 days. Although it is a masterpiece, it was not performed very often during the 19th and 20th centuries because of the “lack of density” of the music, etc. Since the 1960s, it has finally been given a chance to be performed, thanks to the positive response by Arnoncourt and the excellent direction by Ponnelle, but at the age of 34 in 1977, it was still extremely challenging. In 1977, when Levine was 34 years old, performing “Tito” was still considered extremely challenging. Here, however, the familiar Poner staging provided a sense of security, Levine’s dynamic performance, and a well-matched ensemble of singers from the 1970s and 1980s, as well as the mellow tone of the Vienna Philharmonic, all blended into a superb performance. All of these blend together to create a superb performance.Naxos Japan
