New work by John Adams (2015). Inspired by the statue of “Scheherazade” in the “Arab World” exhibition in Paris, the work focuses on the “wise woman Scheherazade” who lives in a society of abuse and blasphemy against women, a characteristic of the Arab world, including the story of the Thousand and One Nights. The melody played by Leela Josefowicz, a violinist whom Adams admires, is likened to Scheherazade, and the sound of the violin is used to depict the oppression and freedom that the protagonist embodies. Like the story, this work has a grand scale. -Imported domestic specs -Includes commentary -Recording year: February 19 & 20, 2016/recording location: Powell Hall, St. Louis
