The Del Sol String Quartet will celebrate its 25th anniversary in 2017. Since its founding, the quartet has favored performing only works from the 20th and 21st centuries, and has performed more than 100 world premieres of new works, including commissioned compositions. They sometimes collaborate with the San Francisco Symphony and give lectures at universities to promote new music, and this time they are performing a new work by Terry Riley, a leading minimalist musician, in celebration of his 80th birthday. They also devoted themselves to showcasing the work of Italian composer Stefano Scodanibbio, who died in 2012 with little recognition despite his great talent. Both Riley’s incisive music in “Dark QueenMantra,” accompanied by Gyan Riley’s guitar, and Scodanibbio’s transformations of Monteverdi’s music evoke nostalgic emotions in the listener’s heart. The oriental atmosphere of “The Wheel and Mythic Birds Waltz” is also magical music.Naxos Japan
