Description
Forest Swords’ Engravings returns to print, newly remastered by Rashad Becker and expanded with previously unheard material. First released on Tri Angle Records, the album established Matthew Barnes as a distinctive force in electronic music, earning praise from Resident Advisor, Pitchfork and The Guardian, and taking his immersive live show to festivals including Sonar, Glastonbury, Unsound and Le Guess Who.
Recorded in his Merseyside hometown on the banks of an ancient river, Engravings channels a landscape of silt, sandstone and shifting weather. Its earthy palette folds dub, ambient, post-rock, psychedelia and echoing traces of Liverpool’s club history into a sound that feels both rooted and otherworldly.
The album laid the foundations for Barnes’s later path: acclaimed releases for Ninja Tune, collaborations with Massive Attack and Neneh Cherry, remixes for artists such as Björk, and commissions across film, games and contemporary performance. Engravings stands as the moment he defined his own musical language – a timeless, vital statement that continues to resonate.
