Description
In 1969, a young Augustus Pablo walked into Herman Chin-Loy’s Aquarius Records with a melodica and changed reggae history. His early sessions at Randy’s Studio 17 produced the breakthrough track ‘Java’, followed by his debut album This Is Augustus Pablo, where his distinctive ‘Far East’ sound first emerged. Pablo went on to work with legendary producers including Lee Perry, Keith Hudson, and Bunny Lee, before establishing his own Rockers label, named after his brother’s sound system.
Through Rockers, Pablo developed a sound that combined spiritual depth with inventive reworkings of classic Studio One rhythms, influencing reggae throughout the 1970s and beyond. His collaboration with King Tubby produced King Tubby Meets the Rockers Uptown, now regarded as one of dub’s definitive albums.
This collection draws on Pablo’s classic 1970s period, offering rare dub versions taken directly from the master tapes. These are the deeper, alternate takes—recognisable yet unique—that underline why Pablo remains one of reggae’s most vital innovators. Still the original Rocker, still sounding sweet.
