Dorothy Ashby is a one-and-only person who played the harp to the hilt as a solo jazz instrument. This CD, which couples the Chicago recording “Dorothy Ashby” with the New York recording “Soft Winds” (both from 1961), is a masterpiece that captures the essence of her as a modern jazz harpist. Not only beautiful, but also deeply bluesy and deepened, the 21 pieces have a sense of elegance and richness.
