[Panorama Series: Semi-New Pressings / Encore Pressings] “Panorama” is a series for beginners of classical music that compiles masterpieces of classical music by composer in two-disc sets using Deutsche Grammophon and Decca sound sources. With the exception of a few operas and other works, there are no fade-outs or movement excerpts, and the series is based on the recording of all the movements of a single work. The performances are all masterpieces that can be recommended with confidence. This is an encore pressing of 40 selected titles. This album features four masterpieces of symphonic poems by R. Strauss. All orchestras are the Berlin Philharmonic, with Karajan and Böhm conducting. Karajan’s “Zarathustra” is the first of two recordings. The “Life of a Hero” is also the first of two recordings, but this is the first recording Karajan made for Deutsche Grammophon after the war. The “Four Last Songs” with Janowitz is also a well-established recording. Don Juan” and “Till” by Böhm, who was a close friend of the composer, are also performed with a profound sense of tradition. [Performed by] Norbert Hauptmann (horn) (2), Gundula Janowitz (soprano) (3), Michel Schwalbe (violin) (1, 6), Conductor: Herbert von Karajan (1-3, 6), Karl Böhm (4, 5), Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra Recorded: January 1973 (1), March 1973 (2), February 1973 (3), April 1963 (4, 5), April 1959 (6), Berlin
