Mezzo-soprano Grace Bumbry, born in 1937, has a wonderful voice but overcame various obstacles caused by “racism” that persists even today. She has excelled in dramatic roles such as Carmen and Aida, and sang Wagner’s “Tannhäuser” as Venus at the 1961 Bayreuth Festival. In the Salzburg Festival of 1965, he left a strong impression by singing Brahms’ Lieder, the opposite of Wagner. In this wonderful recital, Bambury shows a new charm, using delicate expression without relying on the power of his voice, and singing simple folk songs with a light touch at times.Naxos Japan
