Coupling two masterpiece titles by Baby Face Willett, a meteor of the jazz organ world! As far as I remember, the first time Willett’s name suddenly came into the spotlight in Japan was when saxophonist/composer John Zorn appeared in the jazz review magazine “My Favorite Jazz Record 88” and introduced “Face to Face” with a passionate comment like “There are so many great organ players besides Jimmy Smith. I think it was almost the first time he introduced “Face to Face” with the enthusiastic comment, “There are so many great organ players besides Jimmy Smith. The first half of this CD is a track from “Behind the 8 Ball. The title of the CD has the nuance of “no time to lose,” “desperate,” and “on the verge of death. The band consists of Willett (organ), Ben White (guitar), Gerald Donavon (drums), and Gene Burge (alto saxophone on “Amen”). Gerald’s last name is sometimes listed as Donovan, and he also played in the bands of Gene Ammons and Eddie Harris before changing his name to Ajaramu and joining the Chicago avant-garde music group AACM.Burge’s alias was “Daddy G.” From around 1964 to 1970, he worked as a performer, arranger, and producer on numerous Chess Records albums, including Fonterra Bath’s “The New Look,” Muddy Waters’ “Electric Mud,” Howlin’ Wolf’s “The Howlin’ Wolf Album,” and others. He was involved in creating the sound for many Chess Records albums, including Fonterra Barth’s “The New Look,” Muddy Waters’ “Electric Mud” and Howlin’ Wolf’s “The Howlin’ Wolf Album. In the fall of 1963, he began appearing at clubs such as “Moroccan Village” in Chicago. About six months later, Argo Records, based in Chicago, recorded Willett. This is “Mo Rock,” the ninth track on the CD and thereafter. The band consists of Willett, Ben White (guitar), and Eugene Barth (drums). The three of them probably thrilled the audience at the demonstration as well. Although this is a studio recording, the title track, which is dedicated to “Moroccan Village,” is a entertaining and thrilling jumble of jazz, blues, soul, and gospel music. ~Excerpt from the commentary by Kazunori Harada
