At the end of the 19th century, the composer Joel Engel elevated Yiddish and Hebrew folk songs to the level of “art music” and was praised by people as the “father of Jewish music. Like Bartók and Kodály in Hungary, Engel traveled throughout Eastern Europe, listening directly to the songs of the villagers and drawing inspiration from them to write numerous works. This collection of Engel’s works firmly captures the culture and passion passed down through the centuries by the Jewish people.Naxos Japan
