Description
Groovy was pianist Red Garland’s third album as a leader, when he was still a member of the first Miles Davis Quartet (1955 – 1958). As frequently happens, the title has little to do with the contents of this LP, which doesn’t concentrate on the styles of soul-jazz or early boogaloo. The title was more of a marketing ploy to engage with a younger audience. However, this doesn’t take anything away from what is a brilliant album.
Featuring bassist Paul Chambers and drummer Art Taylor, who were members of Red Garland’s regular working trio, and both had backed him on his two previous Prestige LPs. Both had also been sidemen for Miles Davis.
Bonus tracks ‘It Could Happen To You’ and ‘You Keep Coming Back Like A Song’ are from the same sessions but not include on the original LP.
“It is grand and easy to enjoy, over and over again. ‘Groovy’ is, well, totally groovy.” – All Music
