Description
1966 (reissued 2021). Shorter’s sylistic approach to composition trades simplicity in the rhythmic approach of his tenor sax for complexity in the rhythm section, with Elvin Jones on drums particularly liberated. With Freddie Hubbard (trumpet), Herbie Hancock (piano) and Ron Carter (bass), this might be the best example of that style that went on to inform the style of Miles Davis’ second great quintet which Shorter had recently joined at the time of this recording.
